OpenAI Intensifies Its Acquisitions in 2026
In a context of heightened competition in the generative AI sector, OpenAI has chosen to strengthen its position through a series of strategic acquisitions. In 2026, the company has already completed six acquisitions, a figure that is nearing the eight acquisitions of the previous year, according to Crunchbase data. This strategy aims to solidify its stance against increasingly aggressive rivals.
On March 19, OpenAI announced its intention to acquire Astral, a company specializing in open-source tools for developers. This acquisition is part of a series of recent purchases, including that of Promptfoo, an open-source tool dedicated to testing AI applications, also completed this month.
A Steady Pace Since January
Since the beginning of the year, OpenAI has demonstrated a marked appetite for acquisitions. In January, it acquired three companies: Convogo, specializing in custom AI solutions; Torch Health, which aims to unify medical records using AI; and Crixet, offering LaTeX editing and team collaboration services. These acquisitions reflect OpenAI's desire to diversify its skills and expand its scope.
In February, OpenAI also finalized an acqui-hire agreement with OpenClaw and its creator Peter Steinberger, thereby strengthening its portfolio of open-source technologies. This acqui-hire strategy allows OpenAI to quickly integrate talent and innovative technologies while consolidating its market position.
Considerable Financial Resources
OpenAI has impressive financial resources to support its ambitions. In February, it closed a funding round of $110 billion, reaching a post-money valuation of $840 billion. This funding, the largest ever raised for a startup, was backed by renowned investors such as SoftBank, Nvidia, Amazon, and Andreessen Horowitz. These funds enable OpenAI to continue its acquisitions and reinforce its leadership position in the AI field.
However, despite this massive financial support, a report from Fortune indicates that OpenAI's cumulative free cash flow could remain negative until 2030, with a projected funding deficit of $207 billion. This deficit may require additional financing solutions, such as debt issuance or equity increases.
Comparison with Competitors
In comparison, Anthropic, OpenAI's main competitor, has been less active on the acquisition front. In 2026, Anthropic completed only one purchase, that of Vercept. In 2025, it had acquired Humanloop and Bun, but remains far behind OpenAI in terms of acquisition volume. This difference in strategy could influence the competitive dynamics between the two companies in the coming years.
Mergers and acquisitions in the startup sector, particularly in AI, continue to be dynamic. Major transactions, such as Capital One's purchase of Brex for $5.15 billion and Eli Lilly's acquisition of Orna Therapeutics for $2.4 billion, illustrate the ongoing appeal of investments in this field. The appetite for acqui-hires and early-stage startup purchases remains strong, driving innovation and growth in the AI sector.
