OpenAI recently announced the launch of its latest model, GPT-5.5, touted as the most intelligent and intuitive model developed by the company to date. This model marks a significant advancement in how users can interact with computers, simplifying complex tasks such as writing and debugging code, online research, as well as creating spreadsheets and documents.
The previous model, GPT-5.4, was released last month, but OpenAI claims that GPT-5.5 stands out for its ability to handle complex tasks autonomously. Rather than requiring meticulous management at every step, users can entrust GPT-5.5 with messy tasks and rely on it to plan, use tools, verify its work, and navigate through ambiguity.
In terms of security, OpenAI assures that GPT-5.5 is equipped with the most robust set of protections to date. Additionally, it uses significantly fewer tokens to accomplish tasks in Codex, enhancing its efficiency.
The deployment of GPT-5.5 will begin on Thursday and will be accessible at the Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise levels of ChatGPT, as well as in Codex. A GPT-5.5 Pro version will be specifically aimed at Pro, Business, and Enterprise users.
This announcement comes amid heightened competition between OpenAI and Anthropic. Companies are potentially rushing toward an IPO later this year. Anthropic recently launched Claude Opus 4.7 and introduced Mythos Preview, an advanced model in cybersecurity. In response, OpenAI developed GPT-5.4-Cyber, a model designed to detect cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Both companies are vying to dominate the market for AI coding and enterprise tools, with OpenAI recently scaling back on "side quests" in favor of seeking larger revenue sources.
Furthermore, the launch of GPT-5.5 comes just days before a highly publicized trial involving Elon Musk and OpenAI executives Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. The trial is set to begin on Monday in a federal court in Oakland, California.
