OpenAI Merges Its Key Applications to Create a Superapp
OpenAI is embarking on the development of a superapp for desktop that will bring together its main applications: ChatGPT, Codex, and the AI browser Atlas. This initiative, reported by the Wall Street Journal, aims to simplify and unify the company's various products. Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, emphasized in a memo that the current fragmentation is slowing down the company and complicating the achievement of the desired quality level.
Last year, OpenAI made headlines with notable launches, including the video app Sora and the acquisition of Jony Ive's AI hardware company. However, the company faces increasing competition, particularly from Anthropic, which has gained popularity with Claude Code. The WSJ reported on Monday that OpenAI's leaders are reviewing elements to deprioritize. Simo told employees last week that they need to avoid being "distracted by side quests."
Fidji Simo stated on X in a post quoting Berber Jin from the WSJ, who wrote Thursday's article, that companies go through phases of exploration and refocusing, and both are essential. She added that when new projects like Codex start to show promising results, it is crucial to fully commit to them. "I am really happy that we are seizing this moment," she asserted.
OpenAI spokesperson Lindsey Held declined to comment further. It is worth noting that the mobile version of ChatGPT will not undergo any changes, according to the WSJ.
