OpenAI Reaches New Heights with Historic Fundraising
OpenAI has recently completed an impressive fundraising round of $122 billion, boosting its total valuation to $852 billion. This colossal amount is intended to support the rapid expansion of its infrastructure, as the company now reports monthly revenues of $2 billion.
On April 1, 2026, OpenAI, under the leadership of Sam Altman, announced this record-breaking fundraising, marking an unprecedented milestone in the tech sector. This operation comes one year after a previous raise of $40 billion, which had already set a record for a private company in the technology field.
A Consortium of Leading Investors
The funding round was orchestrated by a group of influential investors. Among them, Amazon, NVIDIA, SoftBank, and Microsoft played a central role. SoftBank co-led the operation with a16z, D. E. Shaw Ventures, MGX, and TPG. The list of participants has expanded to include major institutions such as:
- Sequoia Capital
- BlackRock (via affiliated funds)
- Blackstone
- Fidelity
- ARK Invest
- Temasek
- Thrive Capital
- University of California funds
For the first time, OpenAI also attracted over $3 billion from individual investors. Additionally, the company will be included in several exchange-traded funds (ETFs) managed by ARK Invest, thereby broadening its access to a wider audience of investors.
Exponential Growth
OpenAI justifies this valuation with impressive figures regarding the adoption of its products. The company has set speed records in reaching 10 million and then 100 million users, and is preparing to surpass 1 billion weekly active users.
Financially, ChatGPT generated $1 billion in revenue in its first year. By the end of 2024, OpenAI had reached $1 billion in quarterly revenue. Today, the company reports monthly revenues of $2 billion, with over 40% of this figure coming from enterprise clients, a proportion it hopes to increase to 50% by the end of 2026.
Investing for the Future
OpenAI describes its strategy as a virtuous cycle: increased computing power allows for the development of more efficient models, which in turn improve products, accelerating adoption and generating more revenue.
Meanwhile, Mistral announced a raise of €830 million, an amount that, while significant, does not rival the scale of funds raised by OpenAI.
The capital obtained will be invested in the development of artificial intelligence infrastructure, supporting research and development, and making OpenAI's products and services accessible to billions of users worldwide.
