OpenAI Delays GPT-5.6 Under Pressure from the Trump Administration
The Trump administration, concerned about potential security issues, reportedly requested OpenAI to postpone the release of its upcoming flagship model, GPT-5.6.
According to The Information, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, informed employees during a Q&A session that GPT-5.6 would be launched as a limited preview — granting access only to a small group of enterprise clients — in compliance with a request from the federal government. During this preview period, the Trump administration would approve client access on a case-by-case basis.
This situation is more favorable than that granted to Anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI, which received an ultimatum earlier this month demanding the suspension of access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models. The administration issued an export control directive prohibiting "foreign nationals" from accessing the technology, including any Anthropic employee who was not a U.S. citizen.
This seemingly harsh approach to AI regulation, following the Trump administration's promises to adopt a "speed is key" approach to technology and encourage a U.S. AI export program, has raised concerns within the tech industry.
Now, some of these concerns appear to be materializing — and in a manifestly uneven manner, according to the company.
