OpenAI Reveals: 13% of French Jobs Threatened by AI

While AI boosts worker productivity, it also poses a risk of job loss, particularly as companies adopt agents capable of performing tasks autonomously on a computer. Numerous studies have been published to estimate the impact of this technology on employment. This week, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT in 2022, released its own European study on the subject, sharing specific figures for France.

In this study, OpenAI categorizes jobs into four groups:

  • Jobs minimally affected by artificial intelligence
  • Those that will grow due to technology
  • Those that will undergo reorganization
  • Those at the highest risk of automation

In France, according to OpenAI's data, 13% of jobs are at high risk of automation. At the same time, 13% of jobs are expected to grow thanks to this technology. Additionally, 29% of jobs may face reorganization. In this last category, AI could alter workflows and required skills while keeping humans at the center of the process. The study also indicates that 45% of jobs in France have a low risk of short-term changes.

It is noteworthy that the percentages of at-risk jobs in France and Europe are lower than in the United States, where the rate is 18%. The percentages also vary from one European country to another. OpenAI highlights that within the EU, the share of at-risk jobs is highest in Germany, Greece, and Italy.

What is the purpose of this data? In the report presentation, OpenAI clarifies that this is not a prediction but a tool to prepare for changes before they occur. “For policymakers, employers, educators, and researchers, this means anticipating change and preparing for it in more detail. Overall employment statistics will only reveal major changes once companies, workers, and institutions have already begun to adapt,” writes the creator of ChatGPT.
