OpenAI Bets on India with Strategic Recruitment
OpenAI, the pioneering company in the field of artificial intelligence, has recently made a strategic decision by hiring Prabhjeet Singh, former president of Uber India and South Asia. Singh has been appointed as the first General Manager of OpenAI for India, a market that the company considers its second largest after the United States. This choice underscores the growing importance of India in OpenAI's overall strategy.
After announcing his departure from Uber, Singh will join OpenAI in September. He will report to Kiran Mani, General Manager for the Asia-Pacific region. His primary mission will be to boost OpenAI's performance in India, focusing on increasing consumer numbers, enterprise adoption, as well as developing partnerships and regulatory engagement.
Expansion and Investments in India
This appointment is part of a series of investments that OpenAI has made in India. The company opened its first office in New Delhi last August and plans to expand its presence with new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru. In 2024, OpenAI also hired Pragya Misra, a former executive at Truecaller and Meta, to lead public policy and partnerships. Her role has since been expanded to include strategy and global affairs.
OpenAI has also brought on Rishi Jaitly, former head of Twitter India, as a senior advisor. His mission is to strengthen relationships with the Indian government on AI-related policies.
Partnerships and Collaborations
In recent months, OpenAI has signed several partnerships in India, covering various sectors such as higher education, enterprise payments, AI-powered commerce, and web streaming. The company is also involved in expanding data centers in the country. The rapid adoption of ChatGPT in India is seen as an indicator of the market's importance to OpenAI. Among its early partners are Indian giants like Reliance and Tata Group.
Recruitment and Local Development
OpenAI has intensified its recruitment efforts in India, seeking to fill key positions such as AI deployment engineers, developer experience engineers, a developer marketing lead, a partnerships director, and solutions engineers. This recruitment strategy aims to enhance OpenAI's ability to meet the growing demand for its technologies in India.
India, a Key Market for AI
India has become a crucial playground for American AI companies, thanks to its vast developer base, a billion internet users, and a growing demand for generative AI. OpenAI's competitor, Anthropic, has also opened an office in India in Bengaluru and recently appointed Irina Ghose, former General Manager of Microsoft India, to lead its local operations.
