Fai Nur describes herself as a "chronically online teenager," passionate about music groups, TV series, and movies. She has always sought to discuss her interests online. When ChatGPT launched in 2022, she immediately recognized the potential of AI. According to her, this technology would finally allow any user to simulate a character, not just watch or talk about their favorite universes, but to live within them. "The role-playing and immersion that fans had always desired were suddenly possible on a large scale," she added.
To bring this vision to life, Nur enlisted her friend Amit Bhatnagar, who grew up creating Minecraft games, and Pritesh Kadiwala. Together, they developed Status AI, a gamified social media application where users can embody any character in any universe. The app was officially launched last year.
Nur explains that to use the app, users must first create a character, then they are transported into a social world built around them. "A user can become a celebrity with millions of followers, enter their favorite show or book, run for president, or go viral on the internet," she specifies. The worlds on Status are user-generated, where the settings, stories, and characters come from player interactions. "You choose a character to be your first follower, then you gain others as the story progresses."
The app offers multiplayer and solo modes for those who want to connect with friends. "We are receiving interest from studios and streamers," Nur states. "They see Status as a way to build audiences before gathering fans in theaters or arenas."
The company announced on Tuesday a $17 million seed and Series A funding round, with investors such as Abstract, General Catalyst, Union Square Ventures, Y Combinator, and LightShed Partners. This funding is a bet that the next chapter of consumer social media will not be another news feed, but rather interactive entertainment and the intellectual property franchises that arise from it.
Nur argues that the era of passive entertainment—where users simply watch the lives of others unfold—is coming to an end. The first generation of AI-based social applications, centered around chatbot experiences like Character.AI and Chai, is already starting to feel outdated. "Status is based on the principle that the next generation doesn't want to watch stories," she says. "They want to engage with stories and even live inside them."
This shift is attracting the attention of media companies. Rich Greenfield, an investor in Status and partner at LightShed, stated that every media company is desperately seeking ways for consumers to live inside the worlds and characters they create.
Nur asserts that the company hopes to reinvent what a consumer app looks like in a post-AI world. "We use AI to create immersive and fun experiences that are safe for brands, interactive, and infinitely dynamic." Status is also part of a trend that TechCrunch reported on at the end of last year, suggesting that the future of social media will be less generalized and more focused on fandoms and niche communities.
Natalie Dillon, an investor at Maveron, argued that the winners of the new era of social media will be "the platforms that combine intimacy, utility, and creativity in the same ecosystem," as they will not "look like traditional social media; they will feel like multiplayer environments where people can build, buy, and belong at the same time."
Nur indicated that the fresh capital will be used to help develop the platform. She already mentioned that Status has seen the creation of over 13 million worlds, with more than 5 million character profiles—indicators that suggest strong early engagement in what Nur calls a new category: immersive social entertainment. "Our early users were primarily young women," she said. "And it is consistently this audience that decides which platforms become cultural."
