Peppa Pig at the Center of Controversy
The entertainment industry is once again shaken by a controversy involving artificial intelligence. This time, it is the animated series Peppa Pig that is in the spotlight. According to Deadline, the series' owner, Hasbro, is facing a wave of criticism after asking young voice actors to sign contracts allowing their voices to be recreated using AI. Broadcast on platforms like Nickelodeon, Paramount Plus, and Amazon Prime Video, Peppa Pig is an extremely popular series currently in its 11th season.
The Deadline article highlights an open letter from the Agents of Young Performers Association (AYPA), a British organization that advocates for the interests of young artists. This letter condemns the contracts proposed to child actors, insisting that they must consent to the use of AI to reproduce their voices in all franchise-related products.
Although the letter does not explicitly mention Peppa Pig, Deadline has confirmed through internal sources that the series is indeed involved in this controversy.
The Debate on Consent for Young Artists
At the heart of the issue lies the question of consent. The AYPA's letter emphasizes that children are not capable of giving fully informed legal consent. It criticizes the notion that a parent's or guardian's approval could justify capturing and using a child's voice indefinitely. According to the AYPA, any contract involving a child's voice should exclude the use of AI.
Hasbro has acknowledged being aware of this open letter. In an email to CNET, the company stated, "We are aware of the letter circulating regarding AI clauses in young artists' contracts. However, we cannot comment on specific negotiations." Nevertheless, Hasbro reaffirmed its commitment to protecting young artists, emphasizing that this is an integral part of its core values. The company is committed to addressing the issue of AI responsibly and transparently while adapting to the evolving standards of the industry.
A spokesperson for the AYPA clarified to CNET that they could not confirm the identity of the "international children's franchise" mentioned in their letter. In the UK, children cannot join Equity, the artists' union, until the age of 10. This leaves parents without union support when faced with contracts that could compromise their children's rights. The AYPA advocates for the exclusion of AI to become a standard in all child actor contracts.
AI and Turmoil in Hollywood
This case is part of a broader context of tensions surrounding the use of AI in the entertainment industry. The same week as the Deadline article, the studio A24 announced a partnership with Google DeepMind to develop AI-based filmmaking tools, sparking outrage among independent film enthusiasts.
AI has become a hot topic in Hollywood, especially during the recent strikes, where unions expressed concerns about the technology's impact on the jobs of artists and technical crews. While AI promises efficiency gains and cost savings for studios, it could also threaten many jobs in the sector.
Transparency is crucial in the use of AI. Last year, a video of Will Smith using AI-generated footage provoked a swift public reaction, illustrating the risks of opacity.
In the music industry, companies are battling against AI deepfakes on digital platforms while negotiating the use of famous artists' tracks for AI remixes, as UMG is doing.
The video game industry is also in deep reflection. Some studios categorically refuse to use AI in game development, while others adopt it to create game elements or supplement voices in their productions.
