Perplexity Introduces Its AI Assistant on MacOS

The simultaneous management of multiple tabs, applications, and folders may soon be a thing of the past thanks to Perplexity. The company has recently opened access to its AI agent, named Personal Computer, to all Mac users. This initiative marks a significant step in the evolution of personal digital assistants.

Perplexity, which has recently shifted its advertising strategy, continues to innovate with a series of launches. Among these are an iOS version of its Comet browser, as well as the Perplexity Health service, designed to centralize health data for paying users. The company has also developed a tool for managing personal finances. Now, its AI assistant is available on MacOS, further expanding its ecosystem.

Launch of Personal Computer on MacOS

Last February, Perplexity introduced Personal Computer, an AI agent designed to optimize the use of personal computers. This service integrates cutting-edge models such as Opus 4.6 from Anthropic, GPT 5.2 from OpenAI, Gemini from Google, Grok from xAI, and Sonar. Initially aimed at professionals with a Max subscription costing $200 per month, it is now available for free to all Mac users.

With Personal Computer, users can delegate tasks to AI agents that operate autonomously on their machines. According to Perplexity, this tool is capable of managing local files, interacting with native Mac applications, operating on the open web, and orchestrating over 400 connectors in a secure environment hosted on Perplexity's servers.

The assistant does not operate entirely independently. Validation checkpoints are integrated to ensure the accuracy of tasks performed. Each action taken by the AI can be reviewed and undone if necessary, thus ensuring complete control for the user.

An Always-Operational AI Assistant

Technically, Personal Computer relies on a hybrid architecture. This approach minimizes the impact on Mac resources by offloading the majority of processing to remote servers. Perplexity emphasizes that using Personal Computer on a Mac mini provides an optimal experience, allowing teams of agents to operate continuously and autonomously.

One of the major advantages of this system is the ability to control the assistant remotely. Users can initiate tasks from an iPhone, utilizing local files and native applications on their Mac, or approve requests requiring human intervention from any device.

Perplexity encourages users to replace the old Perplexity app for Mac with Personal Computer, which will soon be retired. This new service is available to everyone, facilitating daily queries, attachment management, and dictation. However, advanced features remain reserved for Pro and Max subscribers.
