SpaceX Commits to Artificial Intelligence with Cursor

SpaceX, the renowned aerospace company led by Elon Musk, has recently entered into an agreement with Cursor, a startup specializing in AI-driven code generation. This partnership marks a significant step in SpaceX's strategy as it prepares for a highly anticipated IPO.

Founded in 2022 by four former MIT students, Cursor has quickly established itself as a leader in the AI sector. In less than two years, it achieved an annual recurring revenue of $100 million and raised $3.4 billion, bringing its valuation to $29 billion last November.

A Strategic and Financial Agreement

The agreement between SpaceX and Cursor includes an option to acquire the startup for $60 billion later this year. Alternatively, SpaceX could opt to invest $10 billion for a collaborative working partnership. This collaboration would allow Cursor to access the supercomputers of xAI, a subsidiary of SpaceX, to train its AI models.

This partnership is crucial for Cursor, which has been seeking to raise new funds due to limited access to the computing power necessary for its projects.

Challenges and Opportunities

SpaceX has expressed its ambition to combine launch capabilities with AI, despite internal doubts about the feasibility of projects such as deploying orbital data centers. The company hopes that integrating Cursor's flagship product with the Colossus supercomputer, equivalent to a million H100 cards, will create the world's most powerful AI models, as announced on X.com.

However, xAI is lagging behind its competitors Anthropic and OpenAI. Elon Musk has acknowledged that xAI was not well constructed from the start, raising concerns among investors regarding the merger between SpaceX and xAI. The acquisition of xAI by SpaceX, completed in early February, illustrates these fears.

Despite SpaceX's profit margins, the capital injection into xAI could impact the company's core business if success does not materialize.
