Tech Giants Bet on AI, Human Jobs at Risk
Major tech companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta have recently announced waves of massive layoffs. These job cuts, affecting thousands of employees worldwide, are directly linked to the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI). This trend raises concerns about the future of employment in the tech sector.
Since the emergence of generative AI, opinions have diverged on its impact. Some experts believe it will enhance human capabilities, while others fear it will replace many jobs. The recent layoff announcements seem to support the latter view.
Resource Reallocation Towards AI
Unlike the post-pandemic layoffs, which aimed to correct over-hiring, the current reductions are driven by financial reasons. Tech giants are reporting record profits and reallocating their resources to fund AI development.
Deploying AI at scale is expensive. The most advanced models require thousands of NVIDIA chips, some costing over $30,000 each, as well as energy-intensive data centers. Planned expenditures amount to several hundred billion dollars, partly financed by cuts to the workforce.
The Impact of AI on Company Structure
The integration of AI into companies is also changing their internal structure. According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, projects that previously required entire teams can now be managed by a single person assisted by AI. Mustafa Suleyman, head of AI at Microsoft, even anticipates that AI will replace the majority of white-collar jobs in the coming years.
This restructuring is accompanied by the elimination of layers of middle management, allowing companies to become more agile. If the largest companies adopt this approach, it is likely that others will follow suit.
