Safari 27: AI at the Service of Tab Management

In a significant technological advancement, Apple is experimenting with a new feature for its Safari browser that could transform how users manage their tabs. According to information from Bloomberg, preliminary versions of Safari 27 include an automatic tab grouping capability. This feature, which is expected to be officially announced at the WWDC on June 8, would allow users to categorize open tabs based on browsing themes without requiring manual intervention.

This innovation builds on the concept of tab groups introduced with Safari 15 in 2021. At that time, this feature allowed users to manually save and organize their web pages. With Safari 27, Apple retains this idea while enhancing it with partial automation, activated on demand.

A New Approach to Tab Grouping

In the current test versions, a central button in the Safari interface introduces an option called "Organize Tabs." This feature gives users the choice between automatic sorting or manual tab management. In automatic mode, Safari analyzes the open pages and categorizes them based on detected themes.

Two main operations are performed:

• The automatic grouping identifies relationships between open pages and organizes them into relevant categories.
• Safari then autonomously names these groups.

These processes are carried out through local processing on the user's device, ensuring that no personal data is transmitted to Apple's servers.

Safari Facing Competition

Although this feature relies on automated analysis, Apple does not intend to label it under the "Apple Intelligence" brand in its test versions. The operation of this new feature is reminiscent of the Reminders app, which automatically categorizes list items.

Other browsers have explored similar solutions. Chrome had introduced a feature called "Organize Similar Tabs," using its own AI models. However, this initiative was abandoned due to unpredictable results. Google continues its efforts to integrate AI into browsers through its Prompt API, associated with Gemini.

Firefox is also experimenting with a local AI model that suggests tab groups and automatically generates their names, while ensuring that data remains on the device. Opera, for its part, has developed "Tab Islands," which group tabs according to their context and allow management through natural language commands.

Launch and Availability

The automatic tab grouping feature is expected to be available with the new versions of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. These updates will be presented during the opening keynote of the WWDC on June 8, 2026. The final versions of these operating systems are anticipated for September.
