Proton Lumo 2.0: AI Closes the Gap with ChatGPT by +240%

Proton today releases Lumo 2.0, an update that equips its AI assistant with reasoning models, recognition, and image generation, as well as memory and customizable user-controlled profiles. With a score of +240%, Proton Lumo 2.0 narrows its gap with ChatGPT. The company claims significantly higher scores than the previous version on an independent benchmark index, without altering its zero-access encryption architecture.

Launched nearly a year ago as an encrypted alternative to American conversational assistants, Lumo is evolving. This version aims to close the gap with competing models while maintaining commitments to privacy.

Lumo 2.0: +240% on the Artificial Analysis Index

Proton has structured Lumo 2.0 around two models, Lite and Max. These have been tested by the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, an independent ranking that evaluates AI assistants on reasoning and problem-solving tasks.

  • Lumo 2.0 Lite achieves a score 127% higher than Lumo 1.4
  • Lumo 2.0 Max boasts a score of 240%

Andy Yen, founder and CEO of Proton, notes that user tests show a reduced gap with the latest models from OpenAI and Anthropic. This version also introduces a reflection mode, designed to prompt the model to break down its reasoning into several steps before responding, rather than producing an immediate answer.

The update also adds multimodal functions. Lumo can now analyze an image provided by the user, modify it, or generate one within the conversation thread. Even in these types of manipulations, zero-access encryption remains active. Web search, already available in the previous version, gains precision and now cites its sources.

Users can control a memory feature. This can be linked to encrypted projects and allows for retaining certain elements from one conversation to the next. Proton also introduces custom "Lumos," assistant profiles configured for recurring tasks.

Lumo for Business

Lumo for Business receives the same enhancements. Proton emphasizes that team conversations remain end-to-end encrypted, are never logged, and are not used to train future models. Administrators can also manage access.

Lumo 2.0 is available starting today in three plans:

  • The free version covers essential functions for everyday use.
  • Lumo Plus removes conversation limits and adds advanced image generation, project management, and expanded access to Proton's models.
  • Lumo Professional, aimed at teams, adds secure collaboration tools and access management specific to Lumo for Business.
