Proton, a company renowned for its productivity applications that emphasize privacy protection, recently announced a significant update for its AI chatbot, Lumo. Launched last year, this chatbot was designed to offer advanced features while ensuring maximum privacy for users. This Tuesday, a new version of Lumo was unveiled, bringing notable improvements.
Lumo 2.0 introduces a series of new features that enhance the user experience. Among these, image recognition and generation stand out. Users can now upload photos into Lumo for analysis or modification through the chatbot. Additionally, similar to other advanced language models, Lumo can create images based on specific instructions provided by users.
The update doesn't stop there. Lumo 2.0 also enhances the features of Projects, a widget that allows users to manage documents and interact with other Proton products, such as the messaging service and cloud storage. A new user-controlled persistent memory function has been added, allowing Lumo to remember user preferences across different sessions.
Proton claims that this update makes Lumo significantly more efficient than its previous version. According to the company, Lumo 2.0 can handle most queries up to 76% faster. Furthermore, the chatbot is now equipped with a reflection mode, designed to tackle more complex questions or problems with increased efficiency.
Andy Yen, founder and CEO of Proton, emphasized the importance of this complete overhaul of Lumo. "Lumo 2.0 has been rethought from the ground up, and the introduction of reflection mode gives it powerful new capabilities," he stated. He also stressed that users no longer have to choose between advanced AI features and robust privacy protection.
In terms of functionality, the public version of Lumo compares favorably to other leading chatbots such as Gemini and ChatGPT. It offers detailed and contextual responses, similar to those of its competitors. However, Proton stands out by emphasizing user privacy. Lumo uses a zero-access encryption architecture, ensuring that user data is encrypted both in transit and at rest, and is only accessible by the user themselves.
Proton also guarantees that no session data is stored on the server side, meaning that no one at Proton can access the content of conversations. Additionally, the company is committed to never using customer data to train its AI models or sharing it with third parties.
Lumo 2.0 is now available for all users. In addition to the free version, Proton offers paid subscriptions, such as the Plus and Professional tiers, which provide extended resources and access for users.
