SambaNova and Intel: A $10 Billion Ambition
The American startup SambaNova, backed by Intel, is in the midst of negotiations for a new funding round that could value it at $10 billion. This initiative is driven by a growing demand for its AI inference chips, which stand out due to their significantly lower energy consumption compared to traditional GPUs.
The valuation of companies specializing in AI infrastructure continues to soar. According to reports from The Information, SambaNova, which focuses on chips dedicated to AI inference, is looking to raise between $800 million and $1 billion. If this funding round is successful, the company's valuation could reach around $10 billion, marking a fivefold increase in just four months. SambaNova is thus managing to offer a credible alternative to NVIDIA's GPUs, attracting both customers and investors.
Several factors support this new phase, including an increase in orders, Intel's backing, and partnerships with Vista Equity Partners. The demand for more efficient and less energy-intensive AI infrastructure is on the rise. General Atlantic is reportedly in talks to lead this funding round, which could become the largest in SambaNova's history.
Strategic Partnerships and a Growing Market
SambaNova's rise is not solely based on the general excitement surrounding AI. The company has successfully transformed its collaborations into tangible revenue sources.
Intel plays a crucial role in this dynamic. The semiconductor giant holds about 9% of SambaNova's equity and is also one of its clients. Together, they have launched an AI inference solution that combines Intel processors with the RDU technology developed by SambaNova, thereby solidifying their position in a market largely dominated by NVIDIA.
SambaNova has also sealed a partnership with Vista Equity Partners. This fund plans to create a cloud service provider integrating Intel processors, SambaNova's RDU chips, and NVIDIA GPUs. According to Rodrigo Liang, CEO of SambaNova, this agreement represents a revenue commitment of $3.5 billion, reflecting confidence in the company's industrial capabilities.
Major private equity funds, historically focused on software publishers, are now turning their attention to semiconductor manufacturers, particularly those specializing in inference, which has become one of the most sought-after segments of the market.
Innovative Technology Against NVIDIA's Dominance
Beyond the amounts raised, it is SambaNova's technological innovation that captures investors' attention. The architecture of its chips is based on a processing unit called RDU (Reconfigurable Dataflow Unit), designed to accelerate the execution of AI models while significantly reducing energy consumption.
According to Rodrigo Liang, these chips can execute AI models using up to ten times less energy than NVIDIA GPUs in certain inference scenarios. With energy costs becoming a major issue for data centers, this argument represents a significant competitive advantage.
However, SambaNova takes a pragmatic approach. Rather than seeking to completely replace NVIDIA, the company positions its chips as complementary. NVIDIA GPUs handle the most intensive calculations during the pre-filling phase, while SambaNova's RDUs manage model decoding. This facilitates their integration into existing infrastructures and reduces the risk of direct confrontation with the GPU giant.
Nonetheless, the challenge remains substantial. NVIDIA retains nearly 74% of the AI inference chip market, while competitors like Cerebras, Groq, and the in-house chips developed by Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI are ramping up initiatives to capture a share of this market. Additionally, there are industrial constraints, such as the ongoing shortage of HBM memory, a crucial component for SambaNova's chips, which could limit its production capacity.
Despite these obstacles, the company's current trajectory shows that investors are no longer betting solely on AI models but increasingly on the infrastructures that will enable them to run efficiently. If the funding round materializes, SambaNova will join the exclusive club of AI startups valued at $10 billion.
