Samsung and SK Hynix: $590 Billion to Dominate the Chip Market

Samsung and SK Hynix, backed by the South Korean government, plan to invest $590 billion in expanding chip production. Of this total amount, 800 trillion won will be allocated for the construction of four new factories in the southwest of the country, 81 trillion won for a packaging center, and 30 trillion won over 15 years for next-generation chips. This initiative is part of President Lee Jae Myung's effort to stimulate regional economic growth, driven by the increasing demand from AI-related data centers.

The investments cannot come soon enough. According to Jefferies Equity Research (via wccftech), memory prices are expected to rise by 40 to 50% in the third quarter of 2026 and by 30 to 40% in the fourth quarter. For 2027, analysts forecast another increase of 40 to 45%. Relief may not be felt until 2028, when 15 to 20% of the new capacity will be operational. Together, Samsung and SK Hynix control nearly 80% of the global market for broadband memory chips, which are essential for AI-related workloads.

The rise in memory prices is already leading to increased costs in consumer electronics. Apple, for example, has raised the prices of its Macs and MacBooks.
