Nscale: A Meteoric Rise in the World of AI
The British startup Nscale, specializing in infrastructure for artificial intelligence, has recently achieved an impressive valuation of $14.6 billion. Backed by tech giant Nvidia, Nscale ranks among the few European decacorns, alongside companies like Helsing and Mistral AI. This valuation reflects the growing demand for data centers capable of handling large-scale AI computing capacities.
Record Funding for Ambitious Expansion
Nscale has successfully raised $2 billion in a Series C funding round, which it describes as the largest in European history. This amount includes a pre-Series C funding of $433 million, supported by major players such as Blue Owl, Dell, Nvidia, and Nokia, secured in October. This fundraising effort was orchestrated with the support of Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, hinting at a potential initial public offering. Indeed, Nscale's CEO, Josh Payne, told the New York Times that the company might consider going public as early as this year to increase its capital.
Influential Figures Join the Board
As part of its strategic development, Nscale has announced the arrival of renowned figures to its board of directors. Sheryl Sandberg, former Chief Operating Officer of Meta, Susan Decker, former president of Yahoo, and Nick Clegg, former Deputy Prime Minister of the UK, bring their expertise to the governance of the startup.
Strong Partnerships for Major Projects
Nscale is no stranger to significant fundraising. In September, it had already announced a $1.1 billion Series B funding round led by Aker, a Norwegian public company with interests in energy. Aker also co-leads the Series C alongside New York investment firm 8090 Industries. The two companies have agreed that their joint venture, Stargate Norway, will now be fully managed by Nscale. This ambitious project aims to operate with 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by the end of 2026, with OpenAI as the initial client.
An International Expansion Strategy
Last year, Nscale signed an expanded agreement with Microsoft to integrate approximately 200,000 Nvidia GPUs into three data centers in Europe and one in the United States, in collaboration with Dell. Both Dell and Nvidia participated in the Series C, alongside other investors such as Astra Capital, Citadel, Jane Street, Lenovo, Linden Advisors, Nokia, and Point72. This funding is expected to accelerate the development of Nscale's AI infrastructure across Europe, North America, and Asia, while strengthening its engineering and operations teams.
A Commitment to Sustainable Development
In addition to equity, Nscale has also raised funds through debt, securing a $1.4 billion term loan backed by GPUs to finance its clusters in Europe. The company aims to meet the growing demand from businesses while committing to using low-cost renewable energy sources. It is also striving to reuse waste heat, develop local skills, and invest in regional infrastructure as part of Stargate Norway.
