Apple Teams Up with AI Giants to Boost Siri
Apple has decided to revitalize Siri by connecting it to several renowned chatbots. According to a report from Bloomberg, the Cupertino company has chosen to integrate AIs such as Gemini from Google, Claude from Anthropic, and ChatGPT from OpenAI. This initiative, while surprising, aims to enhance Siri's functionalities. However, Apple has yet to make an official statement on the matter.
A Strategic Partnership for a Revamped Siri
This is not the first time Apple has considered strengthening Siri by partnering with other AI systems. Initially, the collaboration with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT was planned for 2024. Subsequently, rumors circulated about a partnership with Google to use Gemini. Now, Apple seems to be broadening its horizons by opening Siri to a variety of chatbots while keeping its own voice assistant as the core. However, the revamped version of Siri continues to be delayed and is now expected only by the end of 2026.
Extensions for Personalized Use
Apple wants users to be able to leverage popular chatbots installed on their iPhones through Siri. With an Extensions system, users will be able to choose which connections they want to activate, including those with supported chatbot applications. By interacting with Siri, it will be possible to specify which chatbot to use for obtaining additional information or services.
A Wide Range of Available Chatbots
Although Apple has not yet specified which AI models will be compatible, the App Store already offers a variety of chatbots such as Meta AI, Grok, and Copilot from Microsoft. Alexa/Alexa Plus from Amazon is also present, although it is unlikely that Amazon will allow Apple to use a direct competitor to Siri.
The Reasons Behind This Openness
Apple's strategy to connect Siri to various chatbots seems wise. Chatbots experience rapid cycles of popularity, as evidenced by the recent withdrawal of Sora, OpenAI's video generator, this week. By diversifying options, Apple minimizes the risks associated with the obsolescence of a specific AI. This approach also allows Apple to circumvent certain challenges faced in developing its own AI, particularly regarding integration into the smart home.
A Business Opportunity for Apple
This integration could also prove lucrative for Apple. Users wishing to access their preferred AI through Siri will likely need to subscribe to these services via the App Store, allowing Apple to earn a commission on sales.
Future Capabilities of Siri in Question
It remains to be seen how far Siri can go with these new integrations. For instance, will it be able to offer services similar to those of Alexa Plus, such as ordering an Uber or controlling smart devices? Or can Siri relay advice directly from any chatbot in its own voice? These questions raise concerns, particularly regarding the reliability of the information provided by these AIs.
See You at the Worldwide Developers Conference
We should learn more during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8, where the company will discuss the new features of iOS 27. For those who prefer Siri over other voice assistants, especially among Generation Z, this event will be unmissable.
