Snap Reduces Workforce to Boost Efficiency Through AI
Snap has recently decided to lay off approximately 1,000 employees, representing 16% of its total workforce, as part of a strategy aimed at achieving $500 million in savings. This move is part of an operational transformation effort, focusing on automation and productivity improvement through artificial intelligence (AI).
On April 15, Snap revealed that over 65% of the new code produced is now generated by AI tools. This automation allows teams to focus on higher-value tasks, while repetitive functions or those likely to be automated are handled by AI agents. As a result, Snap can operate with smaller teams while maintaining or even accelerating its development cycles. Additionally, the company has decided to eliminate more than 300 vacant positions, anticipating an organization less dependent on workforce volume and more focused on specific expertise.
Influence of Irenic Capital Management and Market Reaction
This restructuring is partly motivated by pressures from Irenic Capital Management, an activist fund that holds about 2.5% of Snap's capital. This fund is urging the company to optimize its performance and streamline its investments, particularly in areas deemed too costly. In the short term, this strategy appears to be validated by the market, with Snap's stock rising nearly 8% following the announcement of the layoffs. However, the stock has seen a decline of about 25.7% since the beginning of the year, despite this recent rebound.
Snap's CEO, Evan Spiegel, supports this strategic direction, which is expected to not only generate significant savings but also reduce operational expenses, including stock-based compensation. The costs associated with the layoffs are estimated to be between $95 million and $130 million, and will primarily be accounted for in the second quarter.
AI: A Driver of Optimization with Uncertain Outcomes
The introduction of AI as a lever for optimization is seen as a major advancement. However, the sustainability of this model in the long term remains uncertain. While cost reductions may quickly improve margins and satisfy shareholders, they do not guarantee a sustainable competitive position.
Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, emphasizes that while cutting expenses can provide immediate relief, it does not necessarily ensure the company's ability to generate sustainable revenue and maintain its market position. Operational efficiency does not replace a solid product strategy.
This dilemma is particularly evident in Snap's augmented reality division. The company has invested around $3.5 billion in its connected glasses, the Spectacles, which are set to launch this year. However, some investors are questioning this venture and even considering its spin-off or abandonment.
AI: A New Standard for Tech Organizations
In the tech sector, integrating AI into internal processes is becoming an operational standard. Companies are looking to restructure their organizations around this technology, which involves redefining skills, reducing headcount in certain functions, and ramping up specialized profiles to drive these new tools.
The entire sector will closely observe Snap's ability to maintain its growth and genuinely reduce its costs. According to an analysis by Reuters, the group is making this decision to improve profitability and meet investor expectations while capitalizing on the productivity gains offered by AI.
However, it remains to be seen whether this transformation will allow Snap to sustainably strengthen its position or if it is merely a tactical adjustment driven by market pressures. The balance between innovation, cost reduction, and strategic vision will be crucial. For while AI enables doing more with less, it does not replace product differentiation or the ability to capture new uses. Thus, Snap is paving a path that many may follow, but the outcome remains uncertain.
