SpaceX Redirects Its Talent Towards AI
Elon Musk recently revealed that SpaceX will redeploy "a few dozen" of its brightest engineers from the Starship and Starlink teams to focus on artificial intelligence development. This strategic shift aims to accelerate the progress of the Grok model, a central project for the company, in order to close the gap with current industry leaders.
The initiative is not limited to internal resources. In fact, SpaceX has recently finalized the acquisition of Cursor, a startup specializing in AI coding, for an impressive amount of $60 billion. This acquisition is part of a broader strategy to enhance SpaceX's capabilities in artificial intelligence.
A Collective Effort to Catch Up
Last Sunday, Musk detailed SpaceX's plan to revitalize Grok, emphasizing the crucial involvement of Starlink and Starship engineers. "The pace of improvement for SpaceXAI models and infrastructure is accelerating significantly," he stated, highlighting the commitment of these experts to dedicate a significant portion of their time to AI.
At the same time, engineers from Cursor, the recently acquired startup, are also contributing their expertise to the project. The Grok model thus benefits from a training dataset enriched by Cursor, which should boost its performance.
Grok 4.5 in Testing Phase
The latest version of the model, Grok 4.5, is currently in a private beta phase within Tesla and SpaceX. Musk has promised that new models, "trained from scratch," will be launched every month throughout the year, illustrating SpaceX's commitment to maintaining a rapid pace of innovation.
However, the path to leadership in AI is not without obstacles. Musk had to reorganize xAI, the AI startup he founded to compete with OpenAI and Google, due to accumulated delays. This reorganization led to the departure of several co-founders and a complete overhaul of the company.
A Strategic Merger for the Future
In February, Musk integrated xAI into SpaceX, a strategic decision that was closely followed by the acquisition of Cursor. This occurred shortly after SpaceX's record IPO, valued at $85 billion, further strengthening the company's position in the market.
Cursor, led by the young prodigy Michael Truell, who is only 25 years old, has seen its profile soar thanks to this deal. SpaceX has thus been able to offer Cursor access to its supercomputers in exchange for their expertise to improve Grok.
A Strong Commitment to AI
The decision to mobilize the top engineers from Starlink and Starship for the development of Grok reflects SpaceX's commitment to the field of AI. Musk announced that the proceeds from the mega-IPO would be used to build a vast network of orbital data centers. These centers, based on Starlink technology and transported by Starship, will be essential for training and executing increasingly sophisticated AI models.
In documents presented to investors prior to the IPO, SpaceX estimated that its total addressable market could reach $28.5 trillion, with a portion of $26.5 trillion dedicated to AI. This projection underscores the strategic importance of artificial intelligence in the company's future plans.
