Tesla has recently implemented a policy limiting its employees' spending on artificial intelligence to $200 per week. This measure, revealed by an internal memo and reported by The Information, has been in effect since July 6. Prior to this date, Tesla's software engineers were accustomed to spending thousands of dollars each week on tokens. Now, any expenditure exceeding this threshold requires prior approval. However, beta versions of xAI products are not subject to this restriction.
This decision is part of an initiative aimed at enhancing the use of AI within the company. Tesla has launched a platform called Bottle Rocket, which integrates models developed by OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Cursor. Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, has encouraged his teams to test the coding model Composer and Grok from Cursor. Despite this, Grok does not seem to be very popular among employees, who prefer Claude from Anthropic.
Additionally, SpaceX, another company led by Musk, is considering acquiring Anysphere, the creator of Cursor, for an amount of $60 billion. Artificial intelligence is expected to play a crucial role in Tesla's future, particularly through the development of robotaxis and the Optimus robot. This strategy comes as the company's revenues have stagnated for about two years.
