Tidal Opens Its Doors to AI-Generated Music, But Without Compensation
With the rapid rise of music generated by artificial intelligence, Tidal recently announced new guidelines to manage this type of content. The platform has decided to continue hosting these tracks on its service, but with an important condition: those that are entirely created by AI will no longer receive royalties. To help users identify these tracks, Tidal will place a distinctive label on each of them.
The Reason Behind Tidal's Demonetization
In an official statement, Tidal explained that its priority is to protect human artists. The platform believes that revenue should be reserved for original works that are composed, written, and performed by humans. Therefore, Tidal has made the decision not to pay royalties for titles it considers to be entirely produced by artificial intelligence. In the future, Tidal plans to extend this policy to content that is largely artificially generated, as soon as detection tools are advanced enough to allow it. In the meantime, the platform is strengthening its integrity rules to ensure the quality of its service.
Additional Measures Implemented by Tidal
Tidal also announced additional measures to maintain the integrity of its music catalog. Tracks that abusively use the music, name, or image of an artist or group will be removed. Furthermore, titles that could mislead listeners or harm the quality of the service will also be taken down. Tidal is committed to combating fraudulent practices, such as artificial streaming or suspicious uploads. According to a post on the social network X, these new rules will come into effect on July 15.
A Trend Followed by Other Platforms
Tidal is not the only platform taking action in response to the increase in AI-generated music. Earlier this year, Deezer revealed that nearly half of the new tracks uploaded each day were generated by artificial intelligence. However, only a small fraction of these tracks is actually streamed to users, most of them also being deprived of compensation. Spotify has also adopted a similar approach with its "Spotify Verified" badge, a status that profiles and content entirely generated by AI cannot obtain.
