Google Docs Live: A New Era for AI-Assisted Writing
In a world where text generation technologies like ChatGPT and Google Gemini have become commonplace, Google is taking a new step with its Docs Live feature. This innovation, announced at the Google I/O 2026 conference, promises to transform disorganized thoughts into structured text. However, this feature will only be accessible to higher-tier subscribers of Google AI, with deployment expected this summer.
A Revolutionary Feature Unveiled at Google I/O 2026
During the Google I/O 2026 event, Google introduced Docs Live, a tool that converts spontaneous speech into organized text. If permitted, this feature can analyze your connected Google accounts, such as Gmail, Drive, and Chat, as well as the web, to enhance the produced text. A similar feature, called Rambler, was recently introduced in the Gboard keyboard, allowing users to dictate text messages while eliminating hesitations and changes of mind along the way.
A Writing Assistant That Doesn’t Replace Learning
Google positions Docs Live as a hybrid tool, serving both as a dictation secretary and an editor. While it may relieve many people by transforming their thoughts into coherent and engaging text, it is important to note that writing remains a skill that requires time and practice to master. Docs Live can facilitate the process but will not replace the learning and development of writing skills.
The Effectiveness of Docs Live Under Scrutiny
The promise of Docs Live hinges on its ability to transform expressed thoughts into structured text. However, it remains to be seen if the tool performs as well as advertised. A practical test will be necessary to evaluate the time required to revise and reformat the text generated by Docs Live, compared to traditional writing. (For the record, we do not use generative AI for content writing, in accordance with CNET's AI policy.)
A Promising Demonstration
Before the Google I/O conference, a demonstration video showed a Google employee using Docs Live to prepare a speech for a career day at their former high school. The tool ingested their resume and generated amusing analogies to make the speech more engaging. After reading the produced text, the employee asked Docs Live to reformat the analogies into a table and create a personal story. Within a minute, the tool had generated a complete speech.
Access Limited to Premium Subscribers
It is important to note that Docs Live will be exclusively available to Google AI subscribers, specifically those at the AI Pro level ($20 per month) or Ultra level ($100 or $200 per month). Other Google services, such as Gmail Live and Keep, will also benefit from new voice-controlled features, such as inbox search and automatic note-taking.
