Artificial intelligence, while promising to boost productivity, proves to be a costly investment for some companies. Uber is a striking example, having recently decided to limit the use of AI by its employees due to high costs.
Budget Limitation at Uber
At Uber, AI tools are integrated into employees' computers to enhance efficiency. However, in light of significant expenses, the company has chosen to cap the use of these tools. According to Bloomberg, each employee now has a limit of $1,500 per month in tokens for each coding AI tool, such as Cursor and Claude Code. This cap is not cumulative, allowing an employee to spend separately $1,500 on each tool.
An Already Exhausted AI Budget
This decision comes after Praveen Neppalli Naga, Uber's Chief Technology Officer, revealed that the company had already consumed its entire AI budget for the year 2026 in just four months. To maintain some flexibility, Uber allows its employees to request exemptions to the cap if their work requires it. A spokesperson for Uber emphasized that this approach aims to encourage responsible large-scale adoption of AI.
A Widening Phenomenon
Uber is not the only company streamlining its use of AI. Other major American firms, such as Walmart, are also beginning to reassess their AI integration strategies in light of the costs associated with this technology.
