An AirTag tracking has linked a massive book order to an Amazon site where employees describe destructive scanning. The operation was conducted with the consent of a seller, amid concerns that anonymous orders are suspected of targeting scanning for AI.
Employee forums describe VGT3 as a hub for destructive scanning
Discussions on online forums among Amazon employees indicate that VGT3 is destructively scanning large volumes of books. The package tracked by AirTag ended up at the VGT3 sector of the facility coded LAS8, located in the northeast of Las Vegas, whose entrance features a logo depicting a dinosaur holding a book.
An AirTag inserted by the seller enabled tracking
404 Media conducted the investigation using an AirTag to track a shipment of books. The seller agreed to place this tracker in one copy. The stated goal was to determine the destination of the shipment in order to identify the company behind the order, whether it was related to AI or not.
The initial order: approximately 1,000 books purchased anonymously
In July, a bookseller reported on Biblio an order of approximately 1,000 books, placed by an anonymous buyer. Such bulk orders, sometimes indifferent to price, have been reported repeatedly and are widely suspected of fueling scanning operations intended for training AI systems.
