UC Berkeley Law Imposes Strict Restrictions on AI
Artificial intelligence is disrupting the legal field, offering advantages in terms of speed and efficiency, but also posing risks of errors and bias. In response to these challenges, UC Berkeley Law has decided to take drastic measures.
Starting in the summer of 2026, the school will prohibit the use of AI in nearly all graded assignments. Students will not be allowed to use these tools for tasks such as brainstorming, drafting, outlining, writing, revising, translating, or proofreading their submissions.
AI-Free Exams and an Exception for Research
Exams will also be free from any AI assistance. However, an exception is made for legal research, where AI can be used to look up laws or case law. Nevertheless, students remain responsible for the accuracy of the facts they cite.
The Importance of Critical Thinking
UC Berkeley School of Law emphasizes the development of critical thinking skills before the use of AI. The school considers fabricated citations as evidence of prohibited AI use, thereby highlighting the importance of these skills in training future lawyers.
Professors will have the option to relax these rules in certain courses, particularly those that teach how to work with AI.
