OpenAI Unifies ChatGPT, Atlas, and Codex to Counter Anthropic
OpenAI, undergoing a transformation, is set to evolve ChatGPT into a super desktop application. This strategic initiative aims to respond to the growing competition from Anthropic, which has seen notable success among developers and businesses.
Reorganization in Response to Competition
To address this situation, OpenAI has undertaken a comprehensive review of its product portfolio. The company's top executives, including Sam Altman, CEO, Mark Chen, Head of Research, and Fidji Simo, Head of Applications, have analyzed various business sectors to identify those that require a refocus. The goal is to concentrate efforts on the most promising areas and avoid the dispersion that could harm the quality and speed of project execution.
A Super Application to Simplify User Experience
In this context, OpenAI plans to consolidate three of its flagship products: ChatGPT, Atlas, and Codex, into a single application. This approach aims to simplify the user experience by centralizing resources around a single interface. Fidji Simo explained on Twitter that companies go through phases of exploration and refocusing, and that the time has come for OpenAI to concentrate on products that are beginning to bear fruit, such as Codex.
Integration of New Features
OpenAI plans to add new features to Codex to extend its capabilities beyond simple coding, reminiscent of Anthropic's Cowork tool. Subsequently, ChatGPT and Atlas will be integrated into this super application. It is important to note that the mobile application of ChatGPT will not undergo any changes in this process.
ChatGPT (GPT-5.4): Expanded Features
ChatGPT will continue to offer a range of features, including the ability to converse in different languages, including French, to generate, translate, and summarize texts, as well as to generate, optimize, and correct code.
A Major Challenge for OpenAI
Fidji Simo emphasized that this merger represents a unique opportunity to combine the most successful consumer application in the AI field with the most advanced agentic application. This challenge is crucial for OpenAI, which is preparing for a significant IPO, comparable to that of its rival Anthropic. The firm must convince investors of its ability to sustainably monetize its innovations, while some analysts express doubts about its business model.
