BuzzFeed Bets on Artificial Intelligence for a Comeback
BuzzFeed, once famous for its viral quizzes and humorous lists, is seeking to reinvent itself by leveraging artificial intelligence. Despite colossal financial losses of $57.3 million in 2025, the company hopes that AI can redefine social entertainment. However, this new direction does not yet seem to convince either the public or investors.
After dominating the digital landscape with light and engaging content, BuzzFeed is attempting to return to the forefront with a bold promise: to transform social entertainment through AI. Yet, this initiative feels more like a desperate attempt than a well-thought-out strategy. Struggling with financial difficulties and poorly defined products, AI appears to be both an opportunity and a reflection of the company's internal problems.
Concerning Financial Losses
The $57.3 million loss recorded in 2025 is not just a setback but a sign of a struggling business model. BuzzFeed itself has expressed doubts about its ability to continue operations, mentioning persistent liquidity issues in its financial reports. This situation sheds new light on its AI-focused strategy, which seems to be an attempt to cut costs while quickly reviving the company.
The closure of BuzzFeed News in 2023, despite its prestigious awards like the Pulitzer, illustrates this shift in direction. As reported by the New York Times, this decision marks a departure from costly journalism in favor of lighter, more viral formats. Thus, AI is seen as a means to produce more content, faster, but not necessarily of better quality.
Branch Office: The New AI Direction
To formalize its strategic shift, BuzzFeed has launched Branch Office, an incubator dedicated to developing AI projects aimed at the general public. Two applications have already emerged:
- BF Island: a messaging platform focused on creating AI-generated visual content.
- Conjure: an app offering daily photo challenges, inspired by BeReal.
The idea is to leverage meme culture and social interactions. However, the actual utility of these products remains unclear. Why adopt Conjure if its rules are obscure? Why use BF Island to create content that other platforms allow to produce more easily? This lack of clarity leads to immediate disengagement.
The Illusion of AI and a Saturated Market
The presentation of BuzzFeed's new applications at SXSW was meant to validate this strategy, but it mainly highlighted its weaknesses. According to TechCrunch, the demonstration of Conjure left the audience perplexed, unable to grasp the product's interest or functionality. Reactions were marked by awkward silences followed by nervous laughter.
This episode reveals that even in an environment conducive to innovation, BuzzFeed struggles to generate enthusiasm. The problem seems to lie in the value proposition. An app can be experimental, but it must evoke desire, which is not the case here.
Jonah Peretti, founder of BuzzFeed, argues that the web is saturated with content. According to him, value now lies in community and taste. While this principle is relevant, its implementation remains fragile.
BuzzFeed is betting on AI to generate even more personalized content, often absurd or highly contextualized. The risk is that this approach increases noise, leading users to start rejecting it.
Today, the trend is almost the opposite. Successful platforms are not those that produce the most, but those that offer a clear and identifiable experience, with genuine intent. By multiplying automatically generated content, BuzzFeed risks further diluting its identity, which was precisely its strength in its early days.
BuzzFeed is trying to regain relevance, but the gap between its vision and public expectations is evident. The company must transform these experiments into genuinely useful products, or it risks remaining trapped in an opportunistic logic around AI.
