Base44 and Wix: A Bet on Customized AI
Base44, the coding platform acquired by Wix for the impressive sum of $80 million, has recently reached a major milestone by launching its own artificial intelligence model. This acquisition, which took place when Base44 was only six months old and had a team of eight people, marks a significant advancement in helping its users develop applications through natural language.
This initiative comes at a time when discussions about the suitability of advanced models for all uses are multiplying. Furthermore, the question of the long-term viability of companies relying on external models is increasingly debated. Base44's approach, located in the Bay Area, aims to address these concerns by developing an internal model.
A Tailored Model to Outperform Competitors
Although Base44's customized language model is still being deployed, the company hopes it will eventually surpass existing advanced models. Maor Shlomo, the founder of Base44, emphasized that owning their own model allows for significant optimization of latency, cost, and efficiency, which could give Base44 a competitive edge.
This strategy could enable Base44 to outpace competitors like Lovable, a Swedish startup that achieved unicorn status thanks to a Series A funding round last summer. Lovable relies on external language models, but Shlomo anticipates that other companies will follow Base44's example by developing their own models, provided they have sufficient data and resources.
The Importance of Data and Technology
Jonathan Userovici, general partner at Headline, a venture capital firm, highlighted that data, distribution, and technology are the three essential pillars for the defense of AI startups. Although Headline is not an investor in Base44, Userovici acknowledges the importance of these elements in strengthening a company's market position.
Base44 is in line with this trend by developing its Base1 model, which has been trained on a vast dataset derived from millions of real interactions with users of the platform. This data corpus will continue to grow, just like that of its competitors, but Base44 hopes that its specialization will provide an advantage.
Competition and Upcoming Challenges
Base44's competition is not limited to coding startups like Vibe. Advanced AI labs, such as Cursor and xAI, the parent company of Grok, which is now owned by SpaceX, also pose a threat. Claude Code, another player in the Vibe coding space, is also expanding rapidly.
Shlomo believes that despite the advancements of existing models, their generalist nature will limit their ability to meet specific needs, which could work in Base44's favor. However, Userovici warns against underestimating these advanced models, citing the example of Harvey, a legal tech startup that abandoned the development of its own model.
A Strategy to Reduce Costs
Inference costs have become a crucial factor for companies, and Base44 is not immune to this reality. Enterprise clients are now looking to optimize their AI investments, and Base44 hopes that its internal model will help reduce these costs while maintaining high performance.
Shlomo stated that the goal is to create a model that is more aligned with user needs, faster, and less expensive than advanced models. This approach could offer significant cost advantages for clients.
A Promising Future Despite Challenges
For Base44, cost reduction is a major issue, but the company also hopes to improve its margins in the long term. Owning its own model gives Base44 greater control over computing and inference expenses, which could strengthen its financial position.
Despite the challenges, Base44 has experienced significant growth since its acquisition by Wix, recently surpassing $100 million in annual recurring revenue. Although this figure is still lower than Lovable's, which reached $500 million, Shlomo is confident that the engineering effort to develop Base1 will solidify Base44's position as a leader in vertically integrated Vibe coding.
Meanwhile, Wix recently announced a 20% reduction in its workforce, which contrasts with Base44's growth. This decision could have implications for the parent company's overall strategy, but Base44 continues to expand and strengthen its market position.
