Significant Financial Losses for xAI
The artificial intelligence company xAI, led by Elon Musk, recorded an impressive loss of $6.4 billion in 2025, according to SpaceX's IPO documents. This loss comes despite revenues of $3.2 billion for the same year. The figures reveal a growing gap between the company's earnings and expenses.
In 2024, xAI had already reported a loss of $1.56 billion on revenues of $2.62 billion. This trend of increasing losses has thus intensified in the following year.
Merger with SpaceX and Future Ambitions
In February, xAI merged with SpaceX, a strategic decision ahead of the planned IPO this year. This merger could lead to one of the largest IPOs in history, with a potential valuation of $1.75 trillion. Competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic are also considering public offerings, but not before 2026.
xAI had previously acquired its social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which is an integral part of its expansion strategy.
Expansion of Grok and Infrastructure Investments
SpaceX has ambitious plans for its AI, Grok, projecting to expand it to "multiple trillions of parameters." This goal is described as a "radical shift in reasoning depth and overall intelligence." This expansion will require significant investments in computing infrastructure. xAI's Colossus and Colossus II data centers, which collectively provide about 1 gigawatt of computing power, are essential for training and inference of Grok. These centers are operational in 122 days and 91 days, respectively.
The revenue increase from 2024 to 2025 largely comes from "AI solutions and infrastructure revenues," totaling $465 million. This includes $365 million from subscriptions to X and Grok, and $88 million from data licenses. An additional $116 million comes from advertising.
Usage and Adoption of AI Features
In March 2026, SpaceX reported 117 million monthly active users for Grok's AI features, out of a total of 550 million MAUs for Grok and X combined. This shows that only one-fifth of the ecosystem is actively using the AI features.
Capital expenditures in the AI segment surged from $12.7 billion in 2025 to $7.7 billion in just the first quarter of 2026. This represents an annualized capital expenditure rate of approximately $30.8 billion, more than double year-over-year.
Competitor and client Anthropic expects a 130% increase in its revenues, reaching $10.9 billion in the second quarter, which will lead to its first operating profit.
Future Projects and Long-Term Vision
SpaceX is also considering developing orbital data centers, a potentially more cost-effective solution than ground facilities. The goal is to conduct training and inference on these orbital data centers, which Musk has promised will be a much cheaper alternative. The launch of these AI computing satellites is scheduled for 2028, marking a step towards space-based computing infrastructure.
The filing emphasizes that the "future of AI will be determined by control of the physical stack," a vision that guides SpaceX's investments and strategies. Owning the computing infrastructure and vertically integrating across the AI stack allows SpaceX to "train and iterate cutting-edge models at lower costs and at a faster pace."
