YouTube is intensifying its efforts to make labels indicating AI-generated content more visible on its platform. The company recently announced that it will modify the placement of these disclosures on videos, both for long formats and Shorts, to make them more accessible to users.
For traditional YouTube videos, the label indicating the use of AI will now appear directly below the video player, just above the description. Until now, this information was hidden in the "How this content was created" section, requiring users to expand the description to view it. This change aims to provide immediate visibility and simplify access to this crucial information.
Regarding Shorts, YouTube has decided to integrate an overlay that will clearly indicate whether the content was generated by AI. This decision follows previous tests where an overlay signaled the presence of altered or synthetic content. YouTube hopes to standardize its labeling practices, which have been deemed inconsistent in the past.
In its announcement, YouTube emphasized the importance of these modifications. "By moving these labels to the forefront, viewers get the context they need at a glance," the platform stated. This new label format will apply to any photorealistic and significantly altered or AI-generated content. For content that is unrealistic, animated, or slightly altered, viewers will still need to consult the extended description for this information.
Additionally, YouTube is expanding its efforts to automatically identify AI-generated content. The platform is introducing new "internal signals" this month that will allow for the automatic detection and labeling of these videos. While creators are still required to manually disclose the use of photorealistic AI, a label will be automatically applied if YouTube's systems detect significant use of AI.
If content is incorrectly flagged and labeled by YouTube, creators have the option to update the disclosure status via YouTube Studio. However, if the creator has used YouTube's AI tools, such as Veo or Dream Screen, or if the content contains C2PA metadata indicating it was entirely generated by AI, these AI disclosures will be permanent.
YouTube already has automated systems in place to detect AI-generated and synthetically altered content, using markers like C2PA and Google’s SynthID. The platform is committed to improving its effectiveness, particularly for AI videos that attempt to mimic realistic humans and photorealistic environments. YouTube also states that these changes aim to "make it as easy as possible for creators and viewers to access the right information." Disclosure labels are not expected to impact monetization or recommendation algorithms, according to the platform.
