Zhilin Yang, a Voice Rising Against OpenAI
Zhilin Yang, the CEO of Moonshot, recently shared his views on the current state of artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on OpenAI. His company, Moonshot AI, is behind Kimi K3, an AI model that is currently attracting a lot of attention in the industry.
OpenAI and the Illusion of Innovation
Yang made a bold statement by claiming that OpenAI has not invented anything new. He attributes the success of Sam Altman's company to the combination of three pre-existing elements: the Transformer architecture, developed by Google in 2017, computing centers capable of exceeding 10^25 FLOP, and two decades of data accumulated from the internet.
Reinventing Organization for General AI
Zhilin Yang is not trying to downplay OpenAI's achievements, but rather to emphasize that innovation in AI does not solely depend on new technological discoveries. He criticizes Google for failing to leverage its own innovations due to its rigid organization. According to him, achieving general artificial intelligence requires rethinking the organization and utilization of existing technologies, starting from scratch to develop new AI products.
