GenAI.mil: A Central Tool for the Department of Defense

GenAI.mil has become the nerve center for artificial intelligence programs for military personnel and employees of the United States Department of Defense. According to a Pentagon official, 1.5 million workers now use this technology daily. This impressive figure reflects the rapid integration of AI into the daily operations of the DoD.

Launched in December 2025, GenAI.mil started with around 80,000 daily users, a number that quickly increased under the Trump administration, which strongly promoted the use of AI tools across the federal government. Emil Michael, Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering and Chief Technology Officer at the Pentagon, revealed that the number of users surged to 1.5 million in just six months.

Rapid Adoption Thanks to Clear Guidelines

At an event at the Hudson Institute, Emil Michael explained that the increase in users is due to clearer guidelines on the use of AI. Initially, the program lacked clarity regarding its applications and rules. However, with the launch of Google Gemini on the unclassified networks of the DoD, adoption significantly increased. Michael emphasized that when GenAI.mil was introduced, only 80,000 of the 3.5 million workers in the department were using it.

The Pentagon has encouraged the use of GenAI.mil to enhance worker efficiency. The program offers analytical and creative tools, thereby facilitating daily tasks. The fiscal year 2027 budget also plans for significant investments in next-generation AIs and computers.

AI Serving Administrative Tasks

DoD workers are using AI to automate administrative tasks, such as drafting reports or job descriptions. Emil Michael illustrated how AI can reduce the time needed to write a report for Congress from 200 hours to just five. This ability to expedite administrative processes allows workers to focus on more complex and strategic tasks.

Other officials have highlighted that AI can alleviate the cognitive load on employees and optimize the allocation of human resources. The DoD is also exploring the application of AI in combat contexts while ensuring that safeguards are in place to maintain human involvement. Officials recognize that the speed of future wars may require AI to assist in processing data and making decisions more quickly.
