OpenAI and Jony Ive: An AI Smartphone to Challenge Samsung

OpenAI's ambitions in the smartphone market are taking shape with a bold project that could redefine the use of artificial intelligence in our mobile devices. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently shared details about this ambitious project aimed at integrating AI in an unprecedented way into a smartphone.

A year ago, OpenAI acquired the startup io, founded by Jony Ive, the iconic designer of the iPhone. This acquisition marks the beginning of a series of technological developments aimed at creating innovative devices, including a smartphone expected to begin production in the first quarter of 2027, according to information from Ming-Chi Kuo.

Cutting-Edge Technology for AI

To equip this smartphone, OpenAI has chosen MediaTek as the main processor supplier. The selected model is a customized version of the Dimensity 9600, a high-end chip set to launch in the fall of 2026. This chip will be manufactured on TSMC's N2P node, one of the most advanced fabrication technologies currently available, thus positioning the smartphone in the premium segment.

The device will particularly stand out for its photographic and vision capabilities. The smartphone's image processor will benefit from an enhanced HDR processing pipeline, allowing the AI to analyze the environment in real-time through the lens. To manage these features, the smartphone will integrate a dual NPU architecture, with two processors dedicated to AI: one for visual tasks and the other for language. All of this will be supported by LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage, ensuring optimal performance without slowdowns.

A Bet on Volume

Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that if development proceeds as planned, OpenAI could achieve cumulative shipments of 30 million units between 2027 and 2028. This ambitious figure would place OpenAI's smartphone on par with flagship models like the Samsung Galaxy S24.

OpenAI appears to be aiming for massive adoption right from the launch, a bold bet in a market already dominated by giants like Samsung and Apple. Meanwhile, the company is also working on other AI-integrated products, such as earbuds dubbed "sweetpea" and a connected speaker. If OpenAI manages to stand out in the consumer hardware space, it could transform the competitive landscape, particularly against players like Anthropic and Google, who are focusing on the enterprise sector.
