A consultant recently highlighted an unexpected expenditure of $500 million, approximately €429,710,000, by a major company on the AI Claude in just one month. This colossal amount results from the lack of usage limitations for employees, leading to the consumption of trillions of tokens, primarily due to automated workloads far exceeding human usage.
Rising Computing Costs
Anthropic's pricing model for Claude indicates a cost of $5 per million tokens for input and $25 for output. Assuming an average theoretical cost of around $15 per million tokens, an expenditure of $500 million equates to about 33 trillion tokens consumed. To reach such a sum, it would likely require tens or even hundreds of thousands of users utilizing the model intensively, or massive automated workloads.
Microsoft in the Spotlight
Many internet users speculate that Microsoft could be the company involved in this expenditure. In response to these perceived excessive costs, Microsoft is considering restricting internal access to Claude, with a potential removal of most licenses before June 30, 2026.
Questioning AI Usage
This situation highlights the growing issue of costs associated with AI, especially with the deployment of agents in businesses. Companies that have adopted AI on a large scale are facing rising computing costs and uncertain productivity gains. Companies like Uber have already exhausted their 2026 budget for AI programming tools in just four months.
Towards More Reasoned Usage
The phenomenon of "tokenmaxxing" illustrates a backlash after a period of AI overconsumption. While companies like Amazon encourage the use of AI, this may prompt some employees to use these tools for non-essential tasks, thereby increasing token consumption.
