Skills are files containing specific instructions that Claude Code uses to optimize its performance on specialized tasks. These skills are essential not only for maximizing Claude's efficiency but also for saving tokens, as overly large skills can hinder performance.
In this article, we explore seven essential rules for creating effective skills with Claude Code, using the UX Research Analyzer skill as an example.
Keep Skills Focused
The primary rule for creating an effective skill is to focus on a single objective. Avoid developing "mega-skills" that attempt to accomplish multiple tasks, as they are often less precise and harder to compose. For example, targeted skills such as UX Auditor Skill, Microcopy Writer Skill, or Component Spec Generator for a design system are recommended.
Use Role Framing
Role framing involves providing a brief description of the role that Claude Code should play when using the skill. It is better to define this role precisely rather than using vague terms like "experienced product generalist." This helps Claude better understand and execute the skill.
