AI and Math: 76% of Students Doubt Their Academic Future

Three students affiliated with MIT have found that a large majority of young mathematicians feel demotivated by the rapid advancements in AI. Despite promises of funding and an advisory group announced by AI companies, many respondents believe that academic support is lacking and their future is uncertain.
Corporate gestures and rules, but perceived limited impact
OpenAI and Anthropic have pledged a total of $15 million to a foundation aimed at supporting mathematicians. OpenAI has also established an advisory group to evaluate its activities related to mathematics. Meanwhile, high-level mathematical councils have developed guidelines on the use of AI, with no certainty that OpenAI is obligated to comply. Students feel that these concessions have changed little in their situation.
Declining motivation and distrust in academic leadership
Nearly 76% of surveyed students say they are unlikely to pursue an academic career, and a similar proportion reports feeling increasingly unmotivated to conduct research due to developments in AI. Many respondents express marked dissatisfaction with academic leadership. In open-ended responses, one participant calls for institutions to provide guidance rather than platitudes, while another laments a lack of high-level leadership within the community. One summarizes the feeling of helplessness by explaining that it becomes difficult to conduct research or attend seminars if the prevailing impression is that no individual effort will matter much.

What the survey measured and the context that preceded it
Three mathematics students from MIT conducted this survey among 268 young mathematicians, using a Google questionnaire that included both multiple-choice questions and open response fields. The collection of responses concluded shortly after OpenAI published, on October 6, several hundred solutions to longstanding mathematical problems; the authors emphasize that the results capture a perception over a very brief period. They describe exhausting months marked by existential questions and significant personal uncertainty. In this context, some students report considering abandoning their career paths, as AI systems are noted to be capable of solving certain problems more effectively than graduates. Since September, OpenAI has released solutions regarding the Millennium Prize problem on the Navier–Stokes equations, and AI-generated responses have continued to be published.
