SpaceX and the Era of Artificial Intelligence Satellites
SpaceX has recently unveiled AI1, its first generation of satellites dedicated to artificial intelligence. This innovative satellite is capable of providing impressive computing power, ranging from 120 to 150 kW, comparable to that of an Nvidia GB300 rack.
Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, announced an ambitious goal: to achieve an orbital AI capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW) by the end of 2027. This launch also marks a historic moment for SpaceX, which is preparing to go public.
On June 8, 2026, during the launch event, SpaceX highlighted the strategic importance of occupying low Earth orbit to maximize this computing power, emphasizing the associated energy challenges.
Technical Challenges and Innovations
Other tech giants, such as Google and Nvidia, are also exploring the potential of AI satellites. Among the benefits of this technology are access to an unlimited solar energy source and easier thermal dissipation due to the vacuum of space.
However, several technical challenges remain, including thermal management, data throughput between the satellite and Earth, and the reliability of data centers in a hostile space environment.
To address these challenges, AI1 is designed with impressive dimensions: a wingspan of 70 meters and a height of 20 meters. It incorporates a deployable liquid radiator of 110 m² and redundant pumping loops. The thermal panels are oriented to radiate heat while minimizing solar heat absorption.
Technical Features of AI1
AI1 is equipped with a network of solar panels generating 150 kW with a density of 250 W/m². Its computing power peaks at 150 kW, with a constant average of 120 kW, resulting in a ratio of 70 kW per ton.
The computing infrastructure is modular, allowing for the integration of Rubin generation chips or TPUs developed by Google, thus providing increased flexibility and power.
Advanced Production and Connectivity
To accelerate production, SpaceX plans to reuse proven technologies from its Starlink V3 satellites. In terms of connectivity, AI1 will utilize inter-satellite laser links to avoid congestion of traditional radio frequencies.
Data from the satellite will be transmitted to the Starlink constellation, which will serve as a space router to ground stations. Positioned in low orbit between 600 and 800 kilometers, AI1 promises ultra-fast response times of 3 milliseconds.
An Ambitious Industrial Vision
SpaceX does not intend to stop at a single satellite. The company envisions mass industrialization in Bastrop, Texas, where manufacturing infrastructures for solar panels and AI satellites are already under development.
In the long term, Musk is betting on the Terafab project, a chip factory ten times the size of Tesla's Gigafactory, with a production goal of one terawatt (TW) of chips per year.
SpaceX aims to multiply its orbital AI capacity by ten each year after reaching the 1 GW target by the end of 2027.
