Airbnb has updated its app with AI-powered search and new social tools, while adding convenient on-site services. The company emphasizes a cautious approach to AI and promises rapid iterations, with a clear focus on maintaining conversion rates.
A Map of Connections' Travels and Sharing Control
Travelers can now browse a map built from the past or upcoming trips of their connections. When opening a trip, the app displays the connection's accommodation and the experiences they have sought. A setting allows users to refrain from sharing their own journeys with others, for those who wish to limit the visibility of their travels. Last year, the app introduced the ability to connect with other travelers and friends. Airbnb is enhancing these features to encourage the booking of experiences such as food tastings or craft workshops. Additionally, the company is developing neighborhood pages, fueled by customer reviews and other sources, to help discover places to eat and activities to do.
AI Search, Voice Commands, and Dynamic Filters
Airbnb now offers an AI-based search feature, accessible via a button, that allows users to formulate their queries both in writing and verbally. The interface includes dynamic filters that adjust based on individual preferences: for example, entering the word "baby" displays suggestions such as cribs, play areas, or children's books and toys. The AI also selects relevant items regarding accommodations, and the platform plans to enable the comparison of properties in the wishlist through automatically generated summaries and reviews. Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, chose to avoid a chatbot-like interface for these features and announced earlier this year this direction for property discovery. He notes that these functions are just in their early stages and will evolve rapidly in the coming months. He highlights the challenge of designing AI search for e-commerce at Airbnb's scale, citing $100 billion in transactions on the platform, and the necessity of preserving conversion rates.
Delivery, Laundry, and On-Site Equipment Rentals
The fall update brings new services aimed at aligning the offered experience with hotel standards. Meal delivery, laundry services, and the option to rent baby equipment are now available. Depending on the location, travelers can also book skis or boats. Grocery delivery is also being expanded. These new features integrate with the app launched last year.
