AirTrunk, a data center operator backed by Blackstone, has announced a colossal investment of $30 billion in India by 2030. This initiative is part of a series of commitments from tech groups aimed at expanding computing capacity in India. The Australian company plans to develop 5 gigawatts of new data center capacity, marking one of the largest commitments to the digital infrastructure sector in India.
AirTrunk entered the Indian market earlier this year by acquiring Lumina CloudInfra. This massive commitment underscores the growing appeal of India as a destination for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Tech companies and investors are seeking new geographies to expand their computing capacity, and India appears to be a strategic choice. According to research firm Bernstein, data center capacity in India is expected to increase from 1.5 GW today to 8 GW by 2030.
The Indian government has also taken steps to attract investments in AI infrastructure. Earlier this year, New Delhi proposed tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers until 2047, provided that services are executed from data centers located in India. This initiative aims to enhance India's attractiveness for global tech companies by offering them a favorable tax environment.
AirTrunk has already begun laying the groundwork for its expansion in India. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, announced on X that the state has exchanged a letter of intent for land allocation at the Raigad Pen Growth Center. This site will host a 3 GW data center, requiring an investment of approximately $21 billion. The company also has a development pipeline of about 600 MW spread across Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
However, AirTrunk did not specify whether the proposed project at Raigad would represent the majority of the total planned capacity of 5 GW, or if other developments were being considered elsewhere in India. This announcement follows a meeting between AirTrunk CEO Robin Khuda and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The latter stated on X that this investment would help strengthen India's position as a global hub for cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
AirTrunk thus joins a growing list of companies investing in the country's infrastructure. Giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Uber have also announced major investments in cloud and AI infrastructure in India. Meanwhile, Indian companies such as Reliance Industries, Adani Group, and TCS have unveiled ambitious plans to expand data center capacity.
However, the development of this infrastructure is not without challenges. Data centers require enormous amounts of electricity, water, and land, which could create bottlenecks, particularly in terms of energy supply. Deloitte estimates that building data centers in the Asia-Pacific region could require tens of terawatt-hours of additional electricity by the end of the decade.
AirTrunk's investment strategy is based on several key factors: government support, a large pool of technical talent, and access to renewable energy. According to Robin Khuda, these elements are essential to support the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure in India.
