AI as a Lever for Startups According to Alexandr Wang
During a recent appearance at an event organized by Y Combinator, Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI and current head of Superintelligence Labs at Meta, expressed his belief that artificial intelligence has radically changed the game for startups. According to him, AI now provides small businesses with the opportunity to compete with industry giants, a situation he describes as "Goliath versus Goliath."
Wang characterized this period as an unprecedented opportunity for visionary entrepreneurs. "This is probably a once-in-a-lifetime chance for those with dreams and ambition to realize a vision of the future by building something extraordinary," he stated in a video released on Wednesday. He recalled that the context was quite different in 2016, when Scale AI was launched, a pioneering company in data labeling. This company employs thousands of contractors around the world to sort, classify, and train AI responses for the largest labs.
From David to Goliath: The Evolution of Startups
Last June, Wang stepped down as CEO of Scale to join Meta, following a $14.3 billion deal between his startup and the social media giant. He compared the early days of his company to a "David versus Goliath" battle, where ingenuity was required to carve out a market position with limited resources. Today, he believes that thanks to AI, startups can compete with large companies on equal footing.
Wang emphasized that startups that ambitiously adopt AI can surpass established companies. AI agents, these systems capable of performing complex tasks like programming or customer service management, play a key role in this dynamic.
A Propitious Moment for Innovation According to Tech Leaders
Wang's remarks resonate with other influential figures in Silicon Valley. At the same event, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, reaffirmed his faith in the potential of AI for startups. "We are going through a very intense period, and there has never been a better time to start a company than today," he asserted. Altman hopes this statement will remain true in the years to come.
Tech investor Vinod Khosla also shared his optimistic vision for the future. He predicts that AI will foster the rise of small businesses by enabling entrepreneurs to delegate tasks like legal and accounting work to automated systems. "By 2035, we could see a quarter of the current number of corporate employees, with 50 million micro-entrepreneurs becoming their own bosses," he stated during a podcast in May.
