Alexandr Wang, a leading figure at Meta in the field of artificial intelligence, has expressed his desire to see the current tensions among AI leaders ease. During a recent appearance, he referred to these conflicts as "unfortunate," hoping that rivalries will eventually resolve themselves. "Maybe it gets worse, then it gets better," he stated.

Wang has faced criticism from Yann LeCun, former Chief AI Scientist at Meta, who claimed that Wang does not fully understand AI researchers. Despite these tensions, Wang met with LeCun, highlighting the strained relationships within the AI sector, where disputes involve figures like Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Elon Musk, the latter currently facing legal challenges.

Notable Rivalries in the Industry

During the "Core Memory" podcast, Wang described any hostility in the AI industry as regrettable. He expressed hope that these animosities would fade over time, emphasizing the importance of collective reflection in the development of this crucial technology.

Yann LeCun, who labeled Wang as "inexperienced," also acknowledged the efforts of Meta Superintelligence Labs in launching their Muse Spark AI model. Wang mentioned a meeting with LeCun in India, a few weeks after the criticisms, highlighting LeCun's expressiveness and prominence in the field. LeCun did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Tensions and Aggressive Hiring

Relations among AI leaders appear to be deteriorating, as noted by host Ashlee Vance. Wang responded optimistically, hoping for improvement as the company moves closer to superintelligence. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and Wang's former roommate, criticized Meta's aggressive hiring strategy, which offers generous compensation packages to attract talent from competing labs.

In June, Altman expressed reservations about this approach, stating that it could harm company culture. Vance mentioned that he had sent a message to Altman regarding the interview with Wang, and Altman did not have flattering things to say. Wang did not directly comment on his relationship with Altman, and OpenAI did not respond to inquiries from Business Insider.

An Industry Seeking Mutual Understanding

Wang expressed empathy for his colleagues, acknowledging the existence of "various misunderstandings" about them. "What is said is never always correct," he asserted, preferring to channel that frustration into the work accomplished by his team.
