Alibaba recently announced the launch of Qwen3.6-Plus, its third artificial intelligence model in just a few days. This model is now accessible via the Alibaba Cloud Model Studio API and is distinguished by its impressive ability to handle one million tokens. The Qwen development team has emphasized enhanced capabilities, particularly in the area of agentic coding, which includes frontend development and the management of complex coding tasks.
Benchmarks published by Alibaba show that Qwen3.6-Plus partially outperforms the previous flagship model from Anthropic, Claude 4.5 Opus. However, it is important to note that these evaluations were conducted by Alibaba itself. Despite these performances, the Opus 4.6 model, launched in December 2025, maintains an edge with a score of 65.4% on the Terminal-Bench 2.0, placing Qwen3.6-Plus behind it.
Historically, Alibaba has made its Qwen models available as open source, but this strategy has recently changed. The previous model, Qwen3.5-Omni, is also not available for free. This decision aligns with the company's desire to generate more revenue from professional clients, as its cloud division faces increased competition, particularly from ByteDance.
According to Bloomberg, Alibaba aims to generate $100 billion in AI-related revenue over the next five years. To achieve this goal, Qwen3.6-Plus will be integrated into the Qwen chatbot application and the new enterprise AI service, Wukong.
