Alibaba Centralizes Its AI Operations Under a New Unit
Alibaba recently announced the creation of a new unit dedicated to artificial intelligence, called Alibaba Token Hub (ATH), under the direct leadership of its CEO, Eddie Wu. This initiative, reported by Bloomberg, aims to consolidate the various branches of the company working on AI to enhance synergy between research, product development, and sales.
The ATH unit includes the research team responsible for the Qwen models, as well as the consumer applications division. It also incorporates the communication platform DingTalk and the technology devices from the Quark brand, such as smart glasses. The name "Token Hub" refers to the billing units commonly used in the AI sector.
An AI Agent for Businesses in the Works
As part of this restructuring, Alibaba plans to launch an AI agent aimed at enterprise clients later this week. This agent, based on the Qwen models, is expected to be gradually integrated into major platforms such as Taobao and Alipay. This announcement comes shortly after the unexpected departure of Junyang Lin, who was in charge of research on Qwen, last March.
Context and Economic Challenges
According to Bloomberg, Chinese AI providers, including Alibaba, are struggling to generate revenues comparable to their Western counterparts like OpenAI. One of the main reasons is the reluctance of Chinese users to pay for software subscriptions. This new structure could therefore be a strategic response to overcome these challenges and strengthen Alibaba's position in the global AI market.
