Allen Telescope Array: Real-Time AI and Pulsar Detection

Despite research starting in 1960 and no discoveries to date, the Allen Telescope Array now relies on AI agents to operate the observatory and sort live radio signals. The system, built on Nvidia's Holoscan, is credited with a throughput of up to 2.4 terabits per second and reducing processing times from several weeks to just a few hours for certain tasks, according to its proponents. The team reports a real-time detection of a pulsar from the Crab Nebula. However, human commands are still entered manually for the time being.
After 1960, no confirmed detections, but a claimed pulsar
The search for extraterrestrial intelligence began with the first SETI experiment in 1960 and has, to date, yielded no discoveries. In this context, the team indicates that it has detected in real-time, thanks to AI, a pulsar in the Crab Nebula, an operation presented as a first. Pulsars, remnants of rapidly rotating stars that emit regular signals, serve as a testing ground to validate detection methods.

AI agents analyze radio signals from the telescope in real-time
At the Allen Telescope Array site in Northern California, artificial intelligence agents are now capable of controlling the telescope and analyzing radio signals instantaneously. Scientists, however, continue to enter their instructions manually. The system relies on Nvidia's Holoscan platform, used by the SETI Institute and Breakthrough Listen to process live data. Nvidia claims that the hardware can achieve a throughput of 2.4 terabits per second. According to the team, processes that previously took weeks are now completed in just a few hours.
Focus on local solutions and sensors on the Moon's far side
The team plans to test open-source solutions capable of operating locally on-site. These trials are envisioned in anticipation of future sensors that could be installed on the far side of the Moon.
