Amazon Announces the End of Mechanical Turk in 2026

Amazon is shutting down Mechanical Turk, the original "Artificial Artificial Intelligence."

Amazon Web Services will close its crowdsourcing service Mechanical Turk to new customers starting July 30, 2026. This change was announced via the AWS Service Availability Updates. Existing customers will still be able to use the service, but it will transition to maintenance mode with no new features. SageMaker Ground Truth and Amazon Augmented AI will also close to new customers on the same date.

Amazon launched Mechanical Turk in 2005 under the slogan "Artificial Artificial Intelligence." Users were paid to complete small tasks that were difficult for machines. In 2018, AWS attempted to reposition the platform as a data annotation tool for AI training as part of SageMaker. A 2023 study revealed that many crowd workers were using language models themselves, which diminished the platform's value as a source of human-generated data.

Today, AI labs tend to rely on specialized providers like Scale AI or Surge AI, which employ vetted experts capable of handling difficult cases and quality judgments.
