Why it matters : Amazon is increasing measures to limit access of third-party AI services to its platform and protect its customers' data.

Amazon has restricted Meta's AI agent Muse from its online store. A message warns users that unauthorized access by an agent violates the Terms of Service. The company cites privacy and security concerns, in a context where it has already sued Perplexity and reduced the visible data in its confirmation emails.

Amazon regulates third-party AI usage, balancing justice and email frugality

Last November, Amazon filed a lawsuit against Perplexity to try to prevent the use of its platform in the Comet shopping experience of the AI search engine. In August, a judge ruled in favor of Perplexity in this matter. Meanwhile, since July, the confirmation emails sent by Amazon have been streamlined, omitting specific item names and product images to limit the information that can be reused by external AI services.

Blocking Muse on Amazon and warning message to users

Meta's AI agent Muse is now barred from making purchases on Amazon's store. A pop-up message appeared on Sunday for Muse users, stating that continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates the Terms of Service accepted by customers. According to GeekWire, Meta had not informed Amazon that Muse would access its store.

Amazon's security arguments and Meta's denials

Amazon argues that there are privacy and security risks, indicating that Muse does not identify itself while browsing and appears to capture customer identifiers. An Amazon spokesperson believes that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other companies must act transparently and respect the decisions of service providers. Meta launched Muse earlier this month and claims that the agent cannot see secure login credentials or credit card information. However, since the launch, reports have indicated that Muse may be able to access the content of users' messages without having the required permissions.
