Amazon Expands Access to Health AI in the United States

Amazon announced on Tuesday the expansion of access to its health virtual assistant, Health AI, to all of its customers in the United States. Initially, this feature was exclusively available to One Medical members. Now, it will be accessible to the majority of users through the Amazon app and website. The rollout of this new offering will occur gradually over the coming weeks, with the goal of making it available to all Amazon customers in the United States.

Features of Health AI

The health AI developed by Amazon is designed to answer general healthcare questions and provide wellness advice. These recommendations are based on users' medical history, medications, and health conditions. To obtain even more personalized responses, users have the option to grant access to their medical records.

Among the features offered by Health AI is the ability to refill prescriptions via Amazon Pharmacy. Additionally, users can be connected with One Medical doctors for consultations via video, in-person, or messaging.

Competition in the Health Chatbot Market

Health AI is not the only player in the health chatbot market. In January, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health, which also answers health questions and can interpret lab results. This service connects to the Apple Health app and users' medical records with their permission. Anthropic has also introduced Claude for Healthcare, which connects to Apple Health and helps manage healthcare-related tasks, such as handling medical bills. Furthermore, Apple is reportedly developing its own AI-based health assistant.

Precautions and Compliance

The use of chatbots for health advice raises concerns, particularly due to the risks of misinformation. It is advised not to enter private or sensitive information into these AI tools and to take their advice with caution, as AI is known to produce "hallucinations." It is recommended to verify any advice given by an AI chatbot with a healthcare professional.

Amazon's virtual assistant is designed to comply with HIPAA and is intended solely to support medical care, not to replace a healthcare provider. Health AI is capable of answering questions such as: "Can you explain my recent cholesterol results and what they mean for me?" or "Which allergy medications are safe with my current prescriptions?" If Health AI is uncertain about its clinical recommendations, it will direct users to a healthcare professional. In case specialized treatment is needed, Health AI allows users to connect with both a provider and a specialist.

Offers for Prime Members

Amazon Prime members interested in using Health AI will be able to take advantage of a free introductory offer. This offer allows them to connect with a One Medical provider for five free direct message care consultations. These services can also be shared with family members if you have Amazon Family and either Prime for Young Adults or Prime Access.

If you use Health AI beyond these first five visits, each telehealth session costs $29. For those planning to use the service more frequently, a One Medical subscription is available for $99 per year. Up to five family members can be added for $66 per year each.

An Amazon representative did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment.
