Amazon is developing an ambitious project for its voice assistant Alexa, codenamed Moonraker. This project aims to enhance Alexa's capabilities by enabling it to manage more complex, multi-step tasks for its users. By positioning itself this way, Alexa enters the competition of advanced artificial intelligence agents. Currently, Alexa+, the AI-enhanced assistant, allows users to perform actions such as booking rides or purchasing tickets through partners like Uber and Ticketmaster. However, Moonraker promises to go even further by allowing Alexa to execute multiple actions from a single command.

The development of this project highlights the significant costs associated with creating a more capable AI. Internal documents reveal that Moonraker has quickly become one of the most expensive components of the latest redesign of Alexa+.

The Challenges of Developing Alexa+

Amazon has faced several obstacles during the development of its Alexa+ assistant. The launch of the assistant has been delayed multiple times before its availability was expanded in the United States earlier this year. Internal beta tests have highlighted issues such as AI hallucinations and inconsistent responses. A notable incident was reported by an employee: Alexa mistakenly turned off an aquarium filter, leading to the death of the fish.

Despite these challenges, Amazon remains determined to advance Alexa+. In his latest annual letter to shareholders, CEO Andy Jassy emphasized that customers interact with Alexa+ twice as often and place online orders three times more frequently than before. He stated that "Alexa is still at the beginning of its journey to become the world's best personal assistant." However, Amazon declined to comment further.

The Promise of Multiple Requests

Documents describe Moonraker as a technology enabling "multi-request" interactions. For example, a user could ask Alexa to "book a ride and send a message to a friend" in a single command. This update is designed to allow Alexa to accomplish multiple related actions within a single interaction.

This approach aligns with that of other tech giants like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, which have introduced AI products capable of navigating the web and completing complex workflows.

A High-Cost Initiative

Moonraker's ambitions come with a substantial cost. A planning document from early this year described the project as the "new highest-cost initiative" of Alexa+, with a forecast of over $100 million in GPU costs by 2026. The document suggested delaying or scaling back the project to alleviate financial pressures.

Some Amazon executives believe the team has overspent on the AI models powering Alexa, and the operational cost of these models has become an increasing concern internally, according to a source close to the matter. This pressure reflects a broader trend in Silicon Valley, where companies are grappling with rising costs associated with deploying advanced AI systems.

Separate planning documents from late last year show that Amazon is preparing hundreds of Nvidia GPUs to support Moonraker and is using an Anthropic Sonnet model for advanced reasoning and visual response functions, as engineers test the system ahead of a wider deployment.
